The Space Shuttle Enterprise was the first space shuttle built for NASA to perform test flights in the atmosphere. However, it was constructed without engines or a functional heat shield, and thus was not capable of spaceflight. The first full scale prototpye was completed on September 17, 1976. Enterprise was originally planned to be named Constitution and unveiled on Constitution Day, September 17, 1976. However, President Gerald Ford said he was partial to the name Enterprise and directed NASA officials to change the name. Enterprise flew on its own for the first time on August 12, 1977. After retirement, Enterprise resided at the Smithsonian Institute before being transferred to the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. Now you can build and own your very own model of this historic shuttle!
